When Missing Loved Ones Becomes a Lifestyle

I grew upward missing people. My male parent was a company man — a corporate nomad — so when it came time to move again, we packed up and went where the career opportunities led him.

The only identify he ever declined to motion was Utah. That's considering no 1 in their correct mind agrees to motility to Utah. (Hey, no offense.)

Growing upward, I missed friends, neighbors, and classmates beyond six states. Relationships were temporary. Living hundreds of miles from relatives, we visited them in one case or twice a year. For seven years, my dad worked 2nd shift so he could climb that corporate ladder; frequently I missed him, too.

When I attended higher, naturally it was out-of-state. Then, I landed a corporate job much similar his and connected the nomadic lifestyle of corporate relocations and missing people.

Once I became a parent, still, I sought to ensure that my own girl didn't grow upward missing people she loved. I wanted to requite her the gift of existence "from" somewhere. I wanted to give her the gift of not continually feeling loss or separation from all that was familiar.

We now live a stone's throw from my parents and other family. Corporate nomads eventually find their oasis, and it'south rarely at the acme of the organizational ladder.

Where is your oasis?

Where is your haven?

The juxtaposition of songs about existent, raw bodily emotion to some of the made upwardly nonsense concerning "micro-aggressions" on college campuses today is startling.
